Anyone watching the side door to the football ground a few minutes later would have been surprised to see eleven men – in the uniform of the Foulmouth Brass Band but wearing football boots – hurry out. If they’d looked into the dressing room, they’d have seen eleven bandsmen, bound and gagged with football socks, wearing only their underwear.

Blackbury United – for it was them in the uniforms – were on their coach and heading for home before anyone realized that they’d gone.

Whoomph! The football wizard was suddenly on the coach, much to the driver’s surprise.

‘Thank you for giving us a hand—’ began Jim Pill.

‘I didn’t,’ said the wizard. ‘I was waiting at the other ground for you. What happened?’

Everyone stared at Stanley.

‘Well, I thought if I said the wizard was there, you might play better,’ he said. ‘And you did!’

‘Do you mean that we did all that playing ourselves?’ asked Abesh. ‘With no magic or anything?’

‘That’s right!’

‘I can see you don’t need me any more,’ smiled the wizard, and vanished.

Blackbury United never saw the wizard again, but they did manage to win their League Cup that year.

Meanwhile, Real Caramba never discovered who had won the match for them. Stanley thought it best not to tell them – and he was probably right.
